Sterling silver is an alloy invented in about the 12th century. It is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The copper is added to give the alloy increased hardness and strength. However the copper introduces an unwanted property. It is the main cause of tarnish. Some people decided it was time to find something better.  Here it is -

Argentium silver alloy is purer than traditional sterling silver.
This Argentium silver is an alloy containing 94% of silver mixed with a smaller amount of copper and a small amount of germanium.  Argentium’s unique formulation makes it highly tarnish-resistant and enhances the appearance of the silver, giving an incredible natural brightness and lustrous beauty that outshines white gold, platinum and even traditional sterling silver.  As Argentium jewellery becomes more readily available, we will add it here.
