Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz that ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to almost opaque brownish-gray or black crystals. The colour of smoky quartz is produced when natural radiation, emitted by surrounding rock, activates colour centres around aluminium impurities in the crystalline quartz. The colour of smoky quartz is sensitive to heat and will pale at temperatures above 200-300°C or by prolonged exposure to UV light.
Morion is a German, Danish, Spanish and Polish name for a very dark brown to black opaque variety.
Cairngorm is a smoky yellow-brown variety of smoky quartz found in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. Some specimens are greyish-brown. It is used in Scottish jewellery, on kilt pins and the handles of sgianan-dubha.
Smoky quartz is common and is not historically important, but in recent times it has become a popular in jewellery.
