A very unusual gemstone. Garnet is not so much the name of a gemstone but the name for a chemical formula -
3R"O.R"'2O3.3SiO2
where R" may be divalent magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), or calcium (Ca), and R"' represents trivalent Aluminium (Al), Iron (Fe), or Chromium (Cr). With so many possible ingredients, almost anything is possible. Garnets are a very large family of gems and it is hardly surprising they come in a spectrum of colors, including red, green, orange, yellow, brown, pink, and even colorless. The color is determined by the type and amount of elements present within the crystal lattice.
