The colour of smoky quartz is produced when natural radiation, emitted by surrounding rock, activates colour centres around aluminium impurities in the crystalline quartz. The colour of smoky quartz is sensitive to heat and will pale at temperatures above 200-300°C or by prolonged exposure to UV light.
